The Spurs have assigned Josh Primo to the G League

The San Antonio Spurs are officially assigning Josh Primo to the Austin Spurs, per a press release from the team on Wednesday morning.

PATFO used the fifth lottery pick in franchise history to select Primo 12th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, making him the fourth international player to come off the board.

The 18-year-old participated in four Las Vegas Summer League games for the Spurs before playing in all of San Antonio’s preseason games and two of their first four regular-season contests.

The Canadian guard joins two-way contract signee and fellow rookie Joe Wieskamp for Austin’s G League training camp beginning at San Antonio’s practice facility today.

Austin’s training camp roster brings back a few familiar faces from their stint in the G League bubble a year ago, including Kaleb Johnson, Nate Renfro, Anthony Mathis, and Jaylen Morris.

Recent two-way contract acquisition Devontae Cacok is also part of the training camp roster. And he should provide Primo a reliable pick-and-roll partner throughout the G League season.

Primo should benefit considerably from this G League assignment as he figures to inherit unlimited minutes, shots, and on-ball reps that probably wouldn’t have been available for him in San Antonio.

There’s a possibility Primo doesn’t spend his entire first go-round with the Austin Spurs. But for now, this is the best place for him to get acclimated to primary scoring and initiating responsibilities.
