Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl post career nights as Spurs fall short of the Lakers

The San Antonio Spurs put forth an admirable effort, fighting tooth and nail but ultimately dropping an overtime thriller to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl feasted on a feeble Purple and Gold defense, with the latter scoring a career-high 27 points and the former dishing out a career-high 15 assists.

Lonnie Walker IV and Devin Vassell also got in on the offensive fireworks, combining for 40 points, nine boards, eight dimes, and ten three-pointers while coming off the bench.

After falling behind early, Jakob gave San Antonio some much-needed momentum with a massive rejection that sent Anthony Davis tumbling to the hardwood.

Lonnie leaped right off the pine and splashed home a corner triple that found nothing but the bottom of the net to pull the Spurs within striking distance in the first quarter.

Then Dejounte emerged from a scrum with the basketball and hit Devin Vassell in transition for an above-the-break trifecta that sent the AT&T Center into a frenzy.

Second-string center Drew Eubanks pulled out his best Patrick Mahomes impression, finding Dejounte down the court with a perfectly placed one-handed outlet pass.

The Silver and Black continued moving well without the ball as Thaddeus Young whipped a beautiful bounce pass between two Lakers as Derrick White made a timely cut to the basket.

Walker caught fire from the corner, draining yet another three-pointer off another intelligent feed as San Antonio pushed the pace at every chance they could get.

And despite singeing the net from beyond the arc, Los Angeles somehow lost track of Lonnie, giving the fourth-year swingman a wide-open three to end the first half.

Although Doug McDermott left the game early with a knee injury, he got everyone in the arena on their feet when he posterized Deandre Jordan and Russell Westbrook.

Lonnie kept things going in the second half, sinking back-to-back-to-back three-balls that gave San Antonio a six-point cushion over their longtime Western Conference rival.

Devin Vassell could do no wrong in the third quarter as he rattled home a prayer on one possession and picked off a poorly executed pass for a pair of fastbreak points on the next.

The second-year wing extended San Antonio’s three-point party into the final frame, showing off his textbook jumper on another uncontested triple courtesy of a dysfunctional Lakers defense.

Jakob drew quite a bit of criticism a year ago for being too soft around the rim, and he attacked the basket with a vengeance, throwing down a two-handed jam over Westbrook.

And Poeltl came back for seconds, giving Malik Monk his Kodak Moment and punishing the hoop with another slam off a gorgeous pocket pass from Dejounte.

The sixth-year center proceeded to wreak havoc in the pick-and-roll as he linked up with Devin Vassell on a nifty hook pass before breaking out the finger roll for a finesse finish.
