Why an Eagles deal for Jalen Ramsey makes sense

Facing major salary cap issues, the Los Angeles Rams will probably trade star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, according to the NFL Insider Tom Pelissero.

Could the Philadelphia Eagles make an offer?

It may sound crazy considering the Eagles had one of the NFL’s best secondaries in 2022. But with lockdown corner James Bradberry and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson set to hit free agency — ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter told a Philadelphia radio station that both players will leave the Eagles for huge paydays — a home run swing for six-time Pro Bowler Ramsey might make sense.

Bradberry and cornerback Darius “Big Play” Slay developed into one of the best cornerback tandems in the league in 2022 while Gardner-Johnson finished as the NFL’s interception co-leader with six picks.

As for what it might take to pry Ramsey from the Rams, Sports Illustrated’s Fan Nation sees the Eagles trading the No. 30 overall pick and a conditional fourth-rounder for Ramsey, noting that Ramsey’s “ultra-competitive spirt and swagger would fit right in with the Philadelphia market.”

Ramsey, the fifth overall pick in the 2016 draft, has starred for the Jacksonville Jaguars as well as the Rams, serving as a key contributor on the 2017 AFC Championship Game Jags team that lost to the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick Patriots. In 2019, the star corner was dealt to the Rams, for whom he helped win the Super Bowl during the 2021-22 season.

Replacing Bradberry with Ramsey would not only be an upgrade, it also would be an on-brand move for the Eagles and GM Howie Roseman, who traded a first-rounder for star receiver A.J. Brown at the draft last April.
