Open Thread: Aldridge and DeRozan tried to recruit Wesley Matthews to the Spurs

The former Mav recently signed with the Pacers after being traded and waived.

Wesley Matthews was recently traded from the Dallas Mavericks in the move that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Big D. He appeared in two games with the Knicks before being waived and ultimately chose to sign with the Indiana Pacers — who recently lost star guard Victor Oladipo to a ruptured quad — due to the promise of a starting position.

However, it would seem Matthews received a lot more interest on the waiver wire than that. As Pacers reporter for The Athlietc Scott Agness noted, he received multiple pitches from other players, including current Spurs LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan.

It’s not surprising Aldridge would be interested in his former Trail Blazers teammate, who is one of the better 3-and-D guards in the league even after a suffering a ruptured Achilles in 2015. However, the Spurs would have had to waive someone to make room for him (likely either Quincy Pondexter or Chimezie Metu), and besides the fact that we aren’t even sure if the PATFO themselves actually spoke with Matthews, he would have had some competition for minutes on a Spurs team deep with guards.

Still, this got me to thinking, if I had to think of a comparable player for Derrick White in the NBA, it would be Matthews, especially as he finds his stroke from three. If White’s ceiling can be the Portland version of Matthews, then the Spurs have quite the steal on the hands once again. Anything more. which certainly seems possible, would be amazing.
