Mayor Nirenberg helps San Antonio Food Bank distribute food as need increases during pandemic

Mayor Ron Nirenberg lent a helping hand to the San Antonio Food Bank on Tuesday to highlight the organization’s need for volunteers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Nirenberg was one of about 250 volunteers at Toyota Field on the Northeast Side who helped fill a line of trunks with about 140 pounds of food — the equivalent of one grocery cart. Families receive items such as milk, produce, pre-made meals, eggs and marinated chicken.

Throughout the year, the San Antonio Food Bank will host distribution events for the community to drive-by and receive fresh goods. Before the pandemic, the type of events used to draw between 200 and 400 people. Since mid-March, however, the Food Bank has fed more than 5,700 households via two drive-by events last week.

Another distribution is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Traders Village San Antonio on the South Side, where Food Bank officials anticipate as many as 5,000 families lining up for food.

People are required to preregister for the distributions at safoodbank.org or by calling 210-431-8326.

If interested in volunteering, the Food Bank gives volunteers health screenings and trains them in social distancing.
