Man, woman killed crossing San Antonio street

SAN ANTONIO – A man and woman were killed Wednesday evening while crossing busy Culebra Road on the West Side.

The couple, believed to be in their late 50s, tried to cross in the 1400 block at about 6:30 p.m.. They made it across three lanes but were hit by a black Dodge Challenger, said Jennifer Rodriguez, a San Antonio Police Department spokeswoman. The driver did not see the pair in time to stop, police said.

EMS crews tried to revive the two, but they died at the scene, police said. The driver tried to render aid and provided police information, Rodriguez said. No charges are expected.

Culebra Road is a frequent location for pedestrian deaths in auto accidents. Rodriguez encouraged pedestrians to always use a crosswalk – in this case, the nearest one was 100 feet away.

“This just appears to be a an extremely tragic situation,” she said.
