Houston Texans Forfeit 2023 Draft Pick; Fined For Cap Violation

Houston Texans Forfeit A 2023 Draft Pick For Cap Violation

This is a punishment from an investigation from the 2020 season. The league released a statement saying that the Texans provided then-quarterback Deshaun Watson with undisclosed compensation. This was done in the form of a membership to an alternative athletic facility. The team will also be fined $175,000 along with forfeiting a 2023 fifth-round draft pick. This is not great for a team that has a lot of holes on the roster.

Moving On From Watson

This is yet another scandal, albeit a more minor one, that surrounds the Deshaun Watson error in Houston. A fifth-round pick is significant draft capital. Baker Mayfield was traded for a fifth-round pick last year. For a team that needs all the young talent they can get, this is not great. The fine is meaningless. This is pocket change for an NFL franchise. The hope for the Texans is that this marks the end of anything having to do with Watson’s time in Houston and they can move forward.

There is renewed hope in Houston. DeMeco Ryans is a great hire and is looking to transform this franchise. They will get the excitement of a new young quarterback along with another exciting first-round player which could be a wide receiver to join the young quarterback. Things are looking up after a disastrous end to the last era.
