Bernie Sanders has thrown his support behind two San Antonio candidates ahead of the 2021 city elections.

The Vermont senator took to Twitter on Tuesday, April 20, to announce his endorsement of Terri Castillo, who is running for City Council District Five, and Luke Amphlette, a candidate for San Antonio ISD District Four School Trustee.

Sen. Sanders, who last captured the attention of the Alamo City during his presidential inauguration mitten photo-op, is voicing his support for these local candidates just one day after early voting began.

Terri Castillo is a native to San Antonio’s West Side, a daughter of migrant workers, and like Bernie has done in the past, is campaigning on a grassroots platform.

Luke Amphlette is U.S. history teacher at Burbank High School and member of San Antonio Alliance, the city’s teacher union.

Amphlette is a staunch advocate of social justice measures in San Antonio and has also been vocal about teacher and student safety during the pandemic.

Earlier this month, he wrote an opinion piece ran by the San Antonio Business Journal calling local schools “testing factories.”

Early voting ends April 27 before the general election on May 1.
