‘Flat out lie’: San Antonio fact-checked Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Prop B debate

Gov. Greg Abbott stirred up the debate surrounding Proposition B ahead of San Antonio’s May 1 election.

If approved, the charter amendment would repeal Chapter 174 from the Texas Local Government Code, which gives the San Antonio Police Officers Association’s right to bargain collectively with the city.

During the first day of early voting, the Republican governor fired up a tweet urging San Antonians to vote against the possible change.

“San Antonio. Don’t defund your police,” he said. “We need SAPD to keep San Antonio safe. #BackTheBlue”

He shared a graphic used by opponents of the proposition which also claims SAPD would be defunded if approved.

Locals quickly jumped in to correct the governor.

“Prop B is about removing collective bargaining for SAPD… please inform yourself first,” Twitter user @Mando33 said.

The comments piled on.

“Saying that prop B has anything to do with funding is a flat out lie. we need accountability in our police force, stop lying to try to get your way,” user @zane4tx said.

Another user, @cateatsglitter, summed it up a different way: “Greg, do you mind pointing out which part of prop B calls for defunding? I don’t see it anywhere on there.”

Others asked Twitter if the post could be flagged for misinformation.

The amendment was added to the ballot after community organizers presented more than 20,000 verified signatures to City Clerk Tina Flores in February.
