Danny Welbeck’s England exile is over with the Brighton striker reportedly one of 55 names included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional World Cup party.

According to The Athletic, the Brighton and Hove Albion striker was named in the long list Gareth Southgate had to submit to FIFA.

Welbeck has been capped 42 times by his country and has scored 16 goals, but hasn’t featured for the Three Lions since a 1-0 friendly win over Switzerland on September 11, 2018 at the King Power Stadium.

Brighton are enjoying a fine season in the Premier League but Welbeck, 31, is yet to score this season in 11 appearances for the Seagulls.

Eberechi Eze, James Maddison and Callum Wilson are also among the outsiders still in contention to be selected in England‘s World Cup squad.

Gareth Southgate selects his 26-man party for Qatar next Thursday but there aren’t expected to be too many surprises, though the injuries to Kyle Walker and Reece James has raised questions over the make-up of England’s defensive options.

The England manager’s final squad will be whittled down from an original list of 55 names, that was submitted to FIFA last month.

And Sportsmail understands Eagles attacker Eze, Leicester attacker Maddison and Newcastle striker Wilson are among the names picked in Southgate’s initial long-list of players – with Brighton’s Lewis Dunk also under consideration.

Given the huge competition for places in Southgate’s squad, it would come as a surprise if any of the three make the final cut next week.

But the trio remain in with a chance of making squad that is schedule to fly to Qatar on November 15 – six days before their tournament opener against Iran.

Of the aforementioned three, Wilson may have the best opportunity of making the squad with Southgate short of genuine firepower.

The form of Marcus Rashford at Manchester United, however, could see Wilson’s chances restricted.

Southgate is a big fan of Rashford and has hoped the forward would return to form in time for the World Cup. The United striker, under Erik ten Hag, is approaching his best form and is now in line for a recall for Qatar.

Joe Gomez and Ben White are among the defenders hoping to capitalise on the potential absences of Walker and James, while Brighton forward Danny Welbeck could be a shock candidate to make the final squad too, as reported by the Athletic.
