Eberechi Eze, James Maddison and Callum Wilson are among the outsiders still in contention to make England‘s World Cup squad.

Gareth Southgate selects his 26-man party for Qatar a week tomorrow. It will be whittled down from an original list of 55 names that was submitted to FIFA last month.

Attacking midfielders Eze of Crystal Palace and Maddison of Leicester, Newcastle striker Wilson, Brighton defender Lewis Dunk and Chelsea centre back Trevoh Chalobah are among the names on Southgate’s initial list, along with Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Danny Welbeck.

There are not expected to be many surprises next week, though the injuries to Kyle Walker and Reece James have raised questions over England’s defensive options, opening the door to Dunk and Chalobah.

Southgate has been criticised for not selecting Maddison, who has not featured for England since 2019, but while his hopes of going to Qatar appear slim, he is still in with a chance.

Wilson may have the best opportunity of making the squad, with Southgate short of genuine firepower, but the form of Marcus Rashford at Manchester United could see chances restricted.

Southgate is a big fan of Rashford and hoped the forward would return to form in time for the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has provided Southgate with a boost by revealing Walker (groin) and Kalvin Phillips (shoulder) are likely to recover in time to be selected.
