While much of Central Texas is experiencing a rainy day, the cities up north and in the panhandle were greeted with a snow and rain mix on Tuesday, January 24. According to the National Weather Service, about six to eight inches of wet snow is expected to hit the Texas Panhandle by Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories for cities in the panhandle, like Armarillo, Borger, Canyon, Dumas, and Pampa. The Fort Worth and Dallas metroplex area is expected to see a rain and snow mix as well north of Interstate 20, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Due to the winter storm, the Texas A&M Forest Service tweeted that it’s assisting the Texas Department of Transportation in its weather response. Motor graders are working Tuesday morning to “clear snow and ice from Interstate 27 from Amarillo to Happy.” As of 9:17 a.m. on Tuesday morning, crews have cleared 30 miles and assisted two motorists.

The weather has forced some parks to close for the day. Palo Duro Canyon State Park posted on Facebook that it has closed due to the weather. Caprock Canyons State Parks closed portions of its park for safety purposes. However, some areas are still open for hiking and day use, according to its Facebook page.

Meanwhile, in San Antonio, the National Weather Service said thunderstorms may become severe between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes are the main threats, with a secondary threat of hail in the Texas Hill Country.
