Local residents will have a chance to celebrate the tireless work of César E. Chávez during the city’s annual march, which will include a very special guest, honoring the American labor leader and civil rights advocate. The 27th annual César E. Chávez March for Justice will take place on Saturday, March 25, ahead of César E. Chávez Day, a holiday recognized by the City of San Antonio.

Hosted by the César E. Chávez Educational Foundation and co-hosted by the City of San Antonio, the march will kick off at Guadalupe St. and Brazos St. close to the Guadalupe Theater at 1302 Guadalupe St. in the heart of the city’s Westside. A program scheduled for 9 a.m. will precede the march and will include the pledge of allegiance, National Anthem, a prayer for farm workers, and a releasing of doves.

This year’s theme is “Finding True Life through Service to Others.”

Marchers will make their way toward downtown beginning at 10 a.m. for the two-mile, pet-friendly trek, which will include a water station at the halfway point. Local leaders attending the march include Mayor Ron Nirenberg, City Council members Teri Castillo and Rosie Castro, Rep. Joaquin Castro, and former San Antonio mayor and current political analyst Julian Castro. The Castro matriarch and twin sons will be a grand marshal trio for the event.

It won’t just be a family affair among the Castros as Chávez’s granddaughter Julie Chávez Rodriguez, director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, will also be in attendance. The march will conclude around 1 p.m. at Hemisfair, where a celebration will include food trucks, music, and guest speakers from the star studded lineup.

Those planning on taking part in Saturday’s events can take advantage of VIA Metropolitan Transit’s complimentary Park & Ride service to and from the march. Participants are welcome to park their car within Lots B and C at the Alamodome and hop on a bus between 8 and 10 a.m. Rides will be provided following the march until 2:30 p.m. Participants can catch the returning buses at Old Bowie St. next to the Institute of Texan Cultures.
