Werner may not be scoring goals, but stats showcase German’s crucial contributions as Chelsea down Sheffield United
Timo Werner proved crucial to the Chelsea cause once again this evening, as the Blues got the better of Sheffield United to continue their ascent up the Premier League table.
Jorginho decides it
Chelsea made the trip to Bramall Lane a short time ago, for a showdown with Chris Wilder’s Blades.
The visitors of course headed into proceedings having enjoyed a fine start to life under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel, racking up 7 points and a trio of clean sheets across 3 outings before Sunday.
And, when all was said and done this evening, such fine form continued.
A hard-fought affair in Sheffield eventually saw the Pensioners emerge on the right side of a 2-1 scoreline.
Mason Mount opened the game’s scoring late in the first-half, picking out the far corner with a sweet left-footed finish after being teed up by Timo Werner:

Disaster struck for Chelsea early in the 2nd-half, though, when a moment of madness on the part of Antonio Rudiger saw the German slot beyond Edouard Mendy and into his own net.
Rudiger’s blushes were spared a short time later, however, when Jorginho struck the evening’s telling goal.
After Aaron Ramsdale upended Timo Werner in the hosts’ area, Chelsea’s Italian midfielder stepped up to slot away the ensuing spot-kick with minimal fuss, securing all 3 points for Tuchel and co. in the process.

Werner contributing
As outlined above, whilst Chelsea didn’t exactly set the world alight tonight, the Londoners, in the end, did what was required to bag a match-winning pair of goals.
And though it was Mount and Jorginho who stole the headlines in finding the net, it was another who had a direct hand in both of the visitors’ strikes.
The player in question? Timo Werner.
The big-money summer arrival at Stamford Brigde has of course been singled out for heavy criticism of late, amid a lengthy fruitless streak in front of goal.
Tonight, though, Werner reminded fans of his ability to contribute elsewhere, with the former RB Leipzig man’s pace and directness having caused Sheffield United’s backline all sorts of problems.
His latest penalty earned, meanwhile, has since given rise to a remarkable statistic, highlighting exactly how effective Werner has been in carving out opportunities from 12 yards to this point in the season:

The fleet-footed attacker was also handed the award for Man of the Match at Bramall Lane, in recognition of his efforts this evening:
