VIA to suspend fares system-wide through April 1

VIA Metropolitan Transit announced Friday that fares will be suspended system-wide beginning Saturday.

All fares for fixed-route buses, VIAtrans trips, and VIA Link on-demand services will be waived through April 1.

“We realize that public transit is a necessity for many in our community every day and perhaps especially during a crisis, including those whose work is essential during emergencies, or who may rely on transit as their only means of travel to workplaces, meal distribution sites, critical service centers, or other necessary trips,” the agency said in a statement.

The fare-free service will minimize in-person interactions when boarding a bus or van and eliminate the need for passengers to use the fare box. The agency expects the measure to speed boarding and minimize crowding at the front door.

VIA asked customers and employees to practice social distancing, staying at least 6 feet away from others when aboard the bus or in any other public place.

“We urge everyone to continue practicing good hygiene to help slow the spread of germs, including washing their hands frequently, sneezing or coughing into their arm, and avoiding public places if they are ill,” VIA said.

The transit agency also advised San Antonians to avoid unnecessary travel.

Juan Amaya, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 694, told the Express-News he had discussions with VIA management throughout Tuesday and was expecting an agreement in which the city’s buses would go on a reduced Saturday schedule for six out of seven days, leaving Sunday unchanged.

That would cut the system’s approximately 780 daily runs on 96 routes to about 520, he said, and would require reducing the hours of many drivers.
