Tottenham are close to completing a move for Leicester City star James Maddison, according to reports.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has had the England international as one of his priority targets throughout the summer transfer window.

And now, it seems as though Spurs have won the race to sign Maddison – despite keen interest from Newcastle – and are nearing a full agreement with the player.

According to the Athletic, the north London club are preparing to table an offer worth £40million plus add-ons for the Foxes playmaker.

While Leicester have been adamant that they want £60million for Maddison, there is optimism that a deal will be agreed between the two clubs.

The same outlet report that personal terms between Spurs and Maddison will not be an issue, with eagerness from both parties to conclude a deal.

Mail Sport revealed this month that Spurs had launched a £50m bid for both Maddison and his Foxes team-mate James Barnes.

Maddison has only a year left on his contract, meaning Leicester must sell him this summer to recover a sizeable fee.

He’s been strongly linked with Newcastle over the past year and the North East side tabled a club-record bid for the midfielder last summer.

However, the Magpies’ interest in Maddison has cooled lately and they’ve turned their attention to other options – such as AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali

Tottenham, meanwhile, are looking to make Maddison their second acquisition of the summer ahead of Guglielmo Vicario’s imminent move to north London.

The Italian goalkeeper is closing in on a £17million move to Spurs after impressing for Serie A side Empoli during last season.

While Vicario is yet to be announced as a Spurs player, it is highly expected that he will arrive soon.

Mailsport previously revealed that he was due to be in London last weekend to undergo a medical ahead of signing a five-year contract
