UEFA have dropped yet another bombshell after taking the decision to scrap the away goals rule for the Champions League, Europa League and the newly-created Europa Conference League as of next season.

The change is set to shake up each of the competitions to its very core, with the rule having caused countless supporters of clubs all around the world both heartbreak and jubilation.

It typically led to some edge of your seat drama, especially with teams looking to strike at the grounds of their rivals first, and the imminent switch-up has led to concerns that some matches will become more defensive affairs.

There have been many highlights over the years where a crunch tie in the Champions League has been decided on away goals. In the space of just a few seconds, clubs have gone from soaring high to enduring crushing lows.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Barcelona and Juventus are just some of the biggest names who have tasted history, and often the wrong side of it, using the ruling – but truly, the list is endless.

Here, Sportsmail has taken a look back at 10 of the very best away goal triumphs, in no particular order…

Manchester United vs Bayern Munich (2010) – Aggregate 4-4

First leg: Bayern Munich 2-1 Man United

Second leg: Man United 3-2 Bayern Munich 

Manchester United were targeting their third straight Champions League final appearance in the 2009-10 season, but Bayern Munich stood in their way. 

The tie was a true rollercoaster, with the Bundesliga club winning the first leg 2-1, and then finding themselves 3-0 down in a little over 40 minutes at Old Trafford.

Ivica Olic hauled back a goal out of nowhere with a wonderful flick beyond Edwin van der Sar, and United were then unable to hold out to reach the last four.

The finishing blow came from Arjen Robben, who was left criminally unmarked from a corner. His thumping volley from Franck Ribery’s delivery nestled into the net.

The aggregate score was locked at 4-4, but Bayern edged through on away goals in the most dramatic of fashions.

Roma vs Barcelona (2018) – Aggregate 4-4

First leg: Barcelona 4-1 Roma

Second leg: Roma 3-0 Barcelona 

Roma’s players and the home crowd were left with tears streaming down their face after they mounted a sensational comeback to beat Barcelona. 

Having lost the quarter-final first leg 4-1, the odds were firmly stacked against them ahead of the reverse fixture in Rome.

But rather than admit defeat, the hosts summoned up all the fire and fury of the Greek gods and triumphed.

Edin Dzeko netted early to hand Roma a glimmer of hope, and the impossible job became less so when Daniele de Rossi converted a second-half penalty.

With the atmosphere reaching fever pitch at the Stadio Olimpico, Kostas Manolas steered home a header at the near post with just eight minutes left on the clock.

Chelsea vs Barcelona (2009) – Aggregate 1-1

First leg: Barcelona 0-0 Chelsea

Second leg: Chelsea 1-1 Barcelona 

This is easily one of, if not the, most controversial Champions League clashes in history – and it’s still a bitter subject for Chelsea fans now. 

They found themselves eliminated in the semi-finals by Barcelona, and were left sickened after a string of controversial decisions from Tom Henning Ovrebo.  

The referee, who would go on to receive death threats, waved away four penalty appeals and Andres Iniesta’s late strike sent Barcelona through.

With the first leg having finished goalless at the Nou Camp, the tie was balanced on a knife edge.

Chelsea even netted first through Michael Essien’s thunderous effort, but the agony at full-time saw Didier Drogba scream ‘It’s a f*****g disgrace’ into a TV camera.

Chelsea vs Paris Saint-Germain (2015) – Aggregate 3-3

First leg: PSG 1-1 Chelsea

Second leg: Chelsea 2-2 PSG 

Another shocking moment for Chelsea in the competition saw them dumped out by Paris Saint-Germain in 2015, this time in the last-16.

Ligue 1 giants PSG progressed on away goals after the clash in London went all the way into extra time, and David Luiz, the former Chelsea man, even scored.

The first leg at the Parc des Princes finished 1-1, leaving the Blues, for a while at least, in the driving seat.

That would all change, however, with Luiz nodding in to cancel out Gary Cahill’s opener – and even Eden Hazard’s penalty couldn’t prevent the defeat.

It was Thiago Silva who was penalised for the penalty after a handball, but he made amends six minutes from time with a header of his own.

Manchester City vs Monaco (2017) – Aggregate 6-6

First leg: Man City 5-3 Monaco

Second leg: Monaco 3-1 Man City

It was goals galore between both these teams in their last-16 encounter, but in the end a talented and stylish Monaco team came out on top.

City claimed the upper hand in the first leg after winning 5-3 at the Etihad, but Monaco fought back in the reverse tie to go through.

Pep Guardiola, on a hunt for his first Champions League trophy since leaving Barcelona, was again left stunned in the competition by the jaw-dropping setback.

In the end, the aggregate score ended up 6-6 after a pulsating 180 minutes of football. It was a tie you wished would never end.

But unfortunately it did, and Monaco were left celebrating at the final whistle after Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho and Tiemoue Bakayoko netted for the principality club.

Manchester City vs Tottenham (2019) – Aggregate 4-4

First leg: Tottenham 1-0 Man City

Second leg: Man City 4-3 Tottenham 

This list doesn’t make good reading for City boss Guardiola. He was left with his head in his hands and out of the Champions League following a topsy-turvy evening.

It looked as though City had beaten Tottenham and got through to the semi-finals at the death, but Raheem Sterling’s goal was ruled out for offside.

That left Spurs as the victors, with Fernando Llorente having bundled home from a corner for an effort given by VAR just under 20 minutes from time.

Tottenham set out to build on the 1-0 lead they took in the first leg, but a chaotic first half bursting with attacking exuberance saw both teams exchange goals. 

Five were scored before half-time, three from City and two for Tottenham, but in the end it was Mauricio Pochettino who was left to race away in wild celebration.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester United (2019) – Aggregate 3-3

First leg: Man United 0-2 PSG

Second leg: PSG 1-3 Man United 

This is perhaps still Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s finest moment at the wheel of Manchester United – but what a moment it was for the club.

Fresh-faced and in the midst of his stint as caretaker boss, Solskjaer steered his team through to the quarter-finals after winning at Paris Saint-Germain.

Having lost the first leg 2-0 in Manchester, United were left with a mountain to climb but quickly set to work with Romelu Lukaku scoring after two minutes.

Juan Bernat smuggled in the equaliser at the back post, but Lukaku handed United hope once again after pouncing on Gianluigi Buffon’s poor handling.

Then, with PSG looking set to squeeze United out, Diogo Dalot’s strike hit the arm of Presnel Kimpembe – and Marcus Rashford stepped up to net an ice-cool penalty.

Juventus vs Porto (2021) – Aggregate 4-4

First leg: Porto 2-1 Juventus

Second leg: Juventus 3-2 Porto 

A goal from Sergio Oliveira in the 115th minute left Juventus reeling and sent Porto through to the quarter-finals.

The stunning tie lurched from one direction to another, but eventually the Turin giants were knocked out in yet more last-gasp Champions League drama.

Porto won the first leg at home 2-1, and quickly increased their lead on aggregate through Oliveira’s first of the evening – a well-taken penalty on 19 minutes.

Juventus then looked to have taken command when Federico Chiesa rifled into the top corner and Porto’s Mehdi Taremi was shown a second booking. 

Chiesa then netted again, this time with a header, to level the tie on aggregate, but Porto held out for extra-time and progressed when Oliveira fired home.

Ajax vs Tottenham (2019) – Aggregate 3-3

First leg: Tottenham 0-1 Ajax

Second leg: Ajax 2-3 Tottenham 

Late chaos doesn’t get more historic than this. Pochettino was left in tears and on his knees after Lucas Moura scored in the 96th minute for Tottenham at Ajax.

His arrowed effort into the corner completed a truly miraculous comeback from Spurs, and sent them into the all-English final against Liverpool.

A young and daring Ajax team won the first leg 1-0, and then quickly extended their aggregate advantage to three clear goals in Amsterdam.

But despite Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech’s best efforts, Tottenham would not accept defeat. Instead, they scored twice within five minutes in the second half.

Moura found himself on a hat-trick after his two poacher finishes, and duly wrapped it up with a left-footed drive deep inside stoppage time.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid (2007) – Aggregate 4-4

First leg: Real Madrid 3-2 Bayern Munich

Second leg: Bayern Munich 2-1 Real Madrid 

This still stands out as one of the best ever Champions League knockout ties, and in the end it was Bayern Munich who got the better of Real Madrid.

Raul and Ruud van Nistelrooy were found in inspired form in the first leg, having handed Madrid a 3-2 win, but Mark van Bommel’s late goal turned out to be crucial.

In the return leg, Bayern mustered up a start beyond even their wildest dreams – with Roy Makaay netting after just 10 seconds. 

Lucio then guided home a header in the second-half, and at that point Bayern looked to be home and dry. 

They most certainly weren’t, however, with van Nistelrooy converting a penalty and Sergio Ramos seeing a goal ruled out. But in the end, Bayern crept through.
