Texas reacts to potential meteorite landing in Rio Grande Valley

Most of South Texas has been in a frenzy as of late after a reported meteorite caused loud booms on Wednesday, February 15. Residents shared their experiences of feeling blasts in the Rio Grande Valley near McAllen, which law enforcement later said was a possible meteorite that was seen by at least two aircraft from Houston Air Traffic Control.

On Wednesday evening, Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said in a tweet that “the exact point of impact is unknown” and that no damage had been reported despite residents in towns throughout the area calling authorities about the effects of the potential meteorite.

The National Weather Service, which monitors Brownsville and the rest of the Rio Grande Valley, added that satellite tools picked up on a signal around the same time that residents’ began noting the noises heard.

Naturally, folks on social media had a lot to say about the (potential) rare occurrence. Again, a meteorite has not been confirmed at this time.

“I live in Mc[A]llen, Texas and my house literally shaked when the meteor hit,” shared u/Youjustgotwhipped. “[T]here are some helicopters looking for the spot where it landed!”

“Didn’t the last time this happened they were tracking for days before? So this one just hits out of nowhere over a populated area?” questioned u/Rev19rb.

Shook multiple homes of my friends and family. They all thought it was an explosion,” added u/NotoriousDMG.

“Nothing crazy. Hundreds of meteorites enter the atmosphere everyday,” said an unimpressed u/MojoMaker666.

“Imagine if this is artillery fire from another world in retaliation for shooting down their drones,” wondered u/joshyoowa.

“A lot of loud bang noise footage usually comes from those,” said u/OldWorldBlues10. “They’ve been going on for a couple months. Seems like they’re getting worse.”

Though a Ring doorbell video didn’t capture footage, a boom noise can be heard in footage shared on Twitter.

Of course, less concerned residents had their fun.

“It was a takuache in a jetpack,” laughed u/Ninjatalon.

They were also quick to make their memes.
