Texas man reportedly shoots, kills man who assaulted his mother

27-year-old Javon Small opened fire against Joseph Wiltz in Houston on Monday, October 31, after he witnessed a domestic dispute between his mother and her ex-boyfriend, Wiltz, ABC 13 reported. Wiltz reportedly arrived at his ex-girlfriend’s home and began assaulting her, during which she left her home and got in her car to flee.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said Wiltz attempted to drag the woman out of her car, which is when Small opened fire against the man, hitting him at least once. ABC 13 also reported that Small and his 15-year-old brother also witnessed the domestic violence that preceded the shooting.

Police said Wiltz was wounded and fled. He was later found in the backyard of a nearby residence, which is where police eventually found him. In a statement to ABC 13, the homeowner said that there were blood tracks leading to their fence and Wiltz had been banging on their back door for help.

Wiltz was transported to a hospital where he died of his injuries. Small and his mother and brother cooperated with police in the investigation. The Harris County District Attorney’s office declined to file charges in the case and will be presented to a grand jury for review. ABC 13 reports that Small’s case is listed as a justifiable homicide.
