Starting Monday, November 7, roughly 80 percent of the City of San Antonio’s 370,000 residential waste collection customers will have new schedules for putting their garbage, recycling, and organics carts out on the curb. They will still be emptied if they are put out during their current scheduled day, but customers are advised to go online or call 311 for info on the new schedule, a news release from the Solid Waste Management Department said.

The schedule change is the result of a growing number of customers and the amount of trash being picked up, the city said. The new schedule is expected to save the city $2.5 million, and customers will not see an increase in their bills as a result of the change, according to the release.

“Let me emphasize that we are not changing any of our services or fees, we are only changing the days of collection,” said SWMD Director David Newman in the release. “Simply stated, our routes have gotten too big.”

According to the city, new routes for drivers, and the addition of 15 new drivers, will cut the number of trips to the landfill from three to two per route.

“Rebalancing routes will make them shorter, allowing employees to finish on time and will also get trucks back to the maintenance shop in time for them to be serviced,” Newman said. “In turn this will mean more consistent and better service for our customers.”

Part of the savings cited by the city in the release is from cutting the need for additional trucks, which cost roughly $400,000 a pop.
