Schertz Police: Hours-long standoff on I-35 ends without incident
A man having a mental health crisis surrendered to police after an hours-long standoff on Interstate 35 that required the highway to be closed early Saturday, March 25.
Schertz Police said in a statement that a man in a vehicle was threatening to harm himself with a firearm, prompting law enforcement to close the northbound and southbound lanes of I-35 as they negotiated the end to the standoff. Officials said the man shot a single round during the negotiations, but no injuries to the man, police or the community were reported.
Police continued peaceful negotiations for another hour and a half, the statement said, and the man eventually dropped his weapon and exited his vehicle, after which he was transported to a hospital for medical care.
New Bruanfels and Cibolo police assisted Schertz law enforcement with the incident. Police are continuing to investigate and said that criminal charges may be pursued.
