A San Antonio police officer shot and wounded a dog after being bitten during a family violence call at a Southside motel room on Wednesday, February 1. The dog bit the officer in the abdomen and buttocks, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Officers responded to a family violence call just before midnight where reportedly a 17-year-old son was hitting his father at the La Quinta Inn in the 7200 block of I-35 South access road on the city’s Southside, not far from Southwest Military Drive and South Park Mall.

Police said the officers walked up to the hotel room door, which was cracked open. The officers knocked, causing the door to open, and startled two large dogs in the hotel room then charged at the officers, according to SAPD.

Police said one of the officers ran away across the parking lot, while the other was cornered and bit by the dog in the abdomen. He also clamped onto the officer’s backside, according to police.

The officer responded by pulling out his gun and shooting the dog. The 17-year-old boy was hit with bullet fragments after running up to the dog.

The boy was treated at the scene by paramedics and then arrested on a charge related to family violence. The wounded officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. He has since been placed on administrative duty while an investigation into the shooting is underway.

Animal Care Services took custody of the dog that had the bullet wound. Officials did not reveal the condition of the dog.
