SAPD: Man shot, killed by SAPD officers after shootout at Northeast Side trailer park

San Antonio police shot and killed a man on the Northeast Side after a shootout with officers Wednesday night, the department said.

Police were called to the 12000 block of O’Connor Road around 9 p.m., for reports of a man shooting his gun inside his trailer at the Greentree Village North Trailer Park. When officers arrived, the man, in his 40s, started firing shots out of the trailer through the door and windows, said Chief William McManus.

At some point, the man set his trailer on fire before escaping the home and walking around the park continuing to fire shots, McManus said. Along the way, he encountered a group of about six officers before allegedly drawing his gun again.

“The way the evidence indicates right now, and I haven’t seen the body camera footage or anything yet, but what I understand to be true, shell casings indicate that he fired shots and they returned that fire,” McManus said.

The suspect was hit by police and died at the scene.

“We don’t know what set him off or what his issue was,” McManus said, later commenting on how the department routinely sees major incidents like this on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

All of the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, pending investigation. McManus said the six officers average about 10 years with the department.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire and as of Wednesday, police were canvassing the area to see what other property damage or injuries were caused by the suspect.
