San Antonio, Texas Hill Country recovering from strong winds, large hail

Severe storms rippled through parts of San Antonio and surrounding areas, bringing rain, heavy wind, and hail on Thursday night, March 2.

The storm battered parts of the downtown area with large-sized hail with some hail even managing to make it through the roof of the Alamodome during the Class 5A high school girls basketball state semifinal featuring Wagner and Frisco Liberty. According to KSAT 12, the minor leak in the roof delayed the final quarter of the game.

Downtown San Antonio seemed to take the brunt of the hail with many taking to Twitter to share their experiences of some of downtown’s beloved hot spots being pelted with hail.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch Thursday evening for Bexar County and surrounding counties in the Hill Country such as Hays and Comal. The initial thunderstorm watch by the National Weather Service was said to have lifted around 10 p.m. There were heavy wind gusts topping over 50 miles per hour in some areas and hail up to one inch or more in size.

According to storm coverage from MySA, heavy winds reported across Texas resulted in several brief power outages across the affected areas, however CPS Energy resolved many of the outages, which reached thousands of customers, by about 9 p.m. Thursday.

CPS Energy provided an update at midnight saying crews were continuing to restore power by repairing downed power lines and cutting down trees away from them.

After two rounds of storms, San Antonio can hope to see some relief on Friday, March 3. The National Weather Service is predicting some colder weather accompanied by sunny skies. However, breezy weather remains Friday morning, but will calm as the day continues. Warm and dry weather conditions are expected to continue through Tuesday, March 7.
