Taqueria El Tapatio De Jalisco, a small restaurant on the Southside, was deemed a complete loss by San Antonio firefighters after a fire broke out on the early morning of Wednesday, May 18. A San Antonio police officer first spotted flames inside the taqueria at 5323 Roosevelt Avenue when he drove by the building around 3 a.m., according to a San Antonio Fire Department battalion chief.

The battalion chief at the scene says a small explosion occurred inside the restaurant.

The officer called the fire in to dispatch and when firefighters arrived, they discovered that the fire began in the kitchen when a small propane leak caused an explosion. The battalion chief says the building is a complete loss with damage estimated at $80,000.

An abandoned taqueria on the Westside was also deemed a complete loss in a similar fire that destroyed the building over night in February. In late March, an apartment complex on the Westside was also destroyed in a fire that firefighters are investigating as arson.

San Antonio has also had more fatal fires in 2022 than in 2021.
