San Antonio is preparing to help residents keep safe and cool this weekend as temperatures are expected to break the 100 degree mark and with an even higher heat index. The cooling stations will be open throughout town starting Saturday, May 7, through Monday, May 9, according to a news release.

The centers will be open to adults 65 and older, children 4 and younger, people with existing medical conditions, and residents who do not have air conditioning. There will be 16 cooling stations open Saturday through Sunday, May 8, and 25 cooling stations on Monday during normal business hours. All cooling stations can be found here.

VIA will offer free trips to and from cooling centers as long as they remain open. The National Weather Service anticipates temperatures to be over 100 degrees over the weekend with a heat index as high as 110 degrees in Central and South Central Texas.

CPS Energy says that it is closely monitoring the expected high-power demand due to the hot weather, but the Electric Reliability Council of Texas says there is enough power to meet that demand. Power plants are expected to remain in operation and will not create blackouts.

SAWS reminds residents that Stage 2 watering rules are still in place due to Edwards Aquifer levels. Watering outdoors during the week is allowed only between 7 p.m. to 11 a.m. and 7 to 11 p.m. on your designated day.
