San Antonio is holding body cam video of Councilman Perry, report says

A new report says that the City of San Antonio is withholding some body camera footage of Councilman Clayton Perry’s alleged DWI and hit-and run and city attorneys are arguing that it doesn’t have to release the video. A letter from the city attorney’s office to the Texas Attorney General’s office argues that San Antonio can withhold that footage because of a pending investigation, the Express-News report.

The report comes after a reporter with the Express-News submitted a public records request for the body cam footage and video from the officer’s vehicle camera under the Texas Public Information Act.

“The release of the requested information would interfere with the detection, investigation, and prosecution of crime,” reads the letter from city attorneys.

Perry has been charged with DWI and fleeing the scene of a crash after he allegedly crashed his Jeep Wrangler into a Honda Civic at Jones Maltsberger and Redland on November 6, 2022. He then drove to his home where partial body cam footage showed an officer found Perry in the yard of his home. Perry had difficulty standing up and slurred his words.

Perry was on his way home from the Northside bar Evil Olive where he reportedly had 14 drinks within hours and then drove to a Bill Miller Bar-B-Q where he tried to give the cashier his keys and wallet while demanding to see the manager. Evil Olive is under investigation by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for over serving.

Perry was arrested for his alleged hit-and-run on November 10 and then went on a hiatus from the city council. He returned from his break in January.
