San Antonio-area lake to close for Fourth of July weekend because of spike in coronavirus cases

Boerne City Lake will be closed this weekend and for the Fourth of July, Boerne city officials said Thursday in a news release. The lake, however, will remain open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week.

The lake will be closed June 27-28 and July 3-5 to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, the city said.

“Boerne and Kendall County have been fortunate that we have not seen the same increase in COVID-19 cases as other parts of the state have,” said Boerna City Manager Ben Thatcher. “The goal with making these adjustments is to keep everyone safe while following the Governor (Greg) Abbott’s advice that we all avoid large gatherings as we all work together to slow the spread of the virus.”

The lake reopened for Kendall County residents only on April 22 after being temporarily closed in March. The lake has since reopened to the public but has capacity restrictions.

While attendance has remained capped, concerns have continued to grow that keeping the lake open on weekends and holidays would bring a crush of people from across the area, the release said.

Statewide, the number of COVID-19 patients has more than doubled in two weeks. Texas has reported more than 11,000 new cases in the last two days alone.
