Man killed in North Side street race ID’d

One of two people killed in a street race on the North Side was identified Thursday as investigators piece together how the accident unfolded.

James Edward Ewell III, 20, died in the incident from multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.

San Antonio police said two cars were racing south at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 8100 block of McCullough Avenue.

One of the cars lost control when a beige SUV entered the road at the Millwood Lane intersection, a police report states.

The car, which had five people inside including Ewell, went into a sideways skid and crashed into a tree at the corner of McCullough and Sandalwood Lane, investigators said.

Ewell and a woman, who was not identified as of Thursday afternoon, died at the scene, police said.

The second car involved in the race collided with the SUV and stopped on the opposite side of McCullough, investigators said.

Five people were taken to area hospitals with injuries.

A report Thursday made no mention of a third sedan that police previously said may have been involved in the incident and fled the scene.
