Former KSAT 12 meteorologist Steve Browne took to his Facebook on Tuesday night, February 7, to post a defense of former KSAT sports anchor Greg Simmons, who resigned earlier this month after his alleged DWI arrest, blaming his decision on women in positions of power. “I know some women will take offense,” Browne said in his post, implying Simmons would have held his job when management was mostly men.

He led the post saying that he was “grieving” the loss of former Express-News sports writer and KENS anchor Dan Cook, who died in 2008. Browne also included Simmons stepping down as part of his source of grief.

Browne said he saw many anchors make “dumb mistakes” in his 26 years of working in the industry, but those mistakes never “ended their career.”

“Management then was all male and humanitarian principles ruled,” Browne wrote. “Now that authority is dominated by women.”

The post is still drawing reactions on Browne’s Facebook page Wednesday morning, February 8, calling the post “irresponsible” to blame women for what happened to Simmons. Others called out Browne for calling the DWI arrest a “mistake.”

“Driving while intoxicated is not a minor mistake” said Austin Marlin Nope in the comments. “He could have killed someone.”

“This is sad analogous writing blaming sexism for consequences earned,” said Cilla Sheri in one of the post’s comments. “We all make mistakes. There are consequences. It is not the fault of women.”

Woman make up 58% of the workforce in the U.S. but only 35% are in senior leadership positions, according to a November 2022 report from Zippia.

“You were someone I admired for most of my life,” said Amber Nicole in the comments. “I don’t know about that so much anymore.”
