Revolution sign free agent defender Jonathan Mensah

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution have announced that they have signed free agent defender Jonathan Mensah.

He will occupy a Senior Roster Slot.

Jonathan Mensah is a 33-year-old, 6’2, 183lb defender from Accra, Ghana.

At the club level, Mensah has played 329 career games (27,535 minutes) across Ghana, South Africa, Italy, Spain, France, Russia, and the United States. Mensah began his career with Ghanaian side Ashanti Gold S.C. (2007-2008), before moving to South Africa to play for Free State Stars F.C. (2008-2009). Mensah then travelled to Italy where he joined Udinese Calcio (2010-2011) but was sent swiftly on loan to Spanish side Granada CF (2010-2011). Following his time in Spain, Mensah travelled to France to play for Thonon Évian Grand Genève Football Club (2011-2016) at first and second team levels. He then went to Russia to join Футбольный клуб «Анжи» Махачкала (2016) (FC Anzhi Makhachkala). Following his one season in Russia, Mensah travelled stateside where he played for the Columbus Crew (2017-2022) and San Jose Earthquakes (2023).

Internationally, Mensah has made 82 appearances for Ghana since 2009. He made 8 Africa Cup of Nations squads (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2022) and was included in 2 Ghanaian World Cup Squads (2010, 2014).

For club honors, Mensah has won the Segunda Division B with Granada (2009-2010), The MLS Cup (2020) and Campeones Cup (2021) with Columbus Crew.

For International honors, Mensah won the FIFA U-20 World Cup & the African Youth Championship, both in 2009 with Ghana.

For individual career honors, Mensah won Columbus Crew Humanitarian of the Year in 2017, Defender of the Year in 2018, 2019, and 2020. He was a member of the MLS BEST XI in 2020.

Head Coach Caleb Porter stated, “During our time together in Columbus, he is someone my staff and I could depend on each and every week, bringing a professionalism and passion to the pitch.”.

Mensah’s contract is a one-year deal with an additional one-year club option for 2025.

With Caleb Porter named as the New England Revolution’s new Head Coach, the Revolution can now look to prepare before the start of their 2024 MLS campaign. Preseason is set to begin on Saturday, January 13th when players report to the Revolution Training Center for entrance physicals and testing. They kick off training on January 15th and are set to travel to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida on Sunday, January 21st for multiple weeks of preseason in preparation for their 2024 campaign.
