Report: Jaron Blossomgame will sign with the Austin Spurs

Earlier rumors of a two-way deal were inaccurate.

According to ESPN’s Michael Wright, the San Antonio Spurs 2017 draft pick Jaron Blossomgame will sign a standard contract with their G-League affiliate in Austin.

Reports earlier in the summer indicated that he would sign a two-way deal with the Spurs, making him eligible to participate in the NBA for up to 45 days per season (excluding the postseason) before becoming a restricted free agent after two years. Those rumors turned out to be incorrect.

With a standard G-League contract, the Spurs will maintain Blossomgame’s bird rights and are the only team eligible to sign him in any capacity. (A similar example would be Spurs’ 2015 second-round pick Cady Lalanne, who currently plays for the Austin Spurs and has participated in summer league and training camp.)

As a fifth-year senior out of Clemson, the 6’ 7” forward was considered one of the most physically mature players in the 2017 draft and an elite defender, but he lacks a reliable shot away from the rim, which is a must for wings in today’s game. Fix that up, and there just might be a place for Blossomgame on the Spurs’ roster in the future.
