It’s not just the San Antonio Spurs who need their superstar Victor Wembanyama to deliver heroics on the court. Sometimes, the Spurs big man can also lend a helping hand to the referees. The Spurs’ win over the Sacramento Kings provided a hilarious example, as Wembanyama had to assist a referee who called on the Spurs center for help.
In the third quarter, the ball got stuck on top of the backboard and the referee was unable to retrieve it on his own. The official then turned to Wembanyama, whose extraordinary height made him the perfect person to help resolve the situation.
“Hey, Wemby, help me out,” the ref said.
At 7 feet 4 inches tall, Wembanyama is among the tallest players in professional basketball. Therefore, the French big man had little difficulty using a stick to dislodge the ball from the top of the backboard.
Being exceptionally tall is not unusual in basketball, but Wembanyama’s combination of size and skill is what separates him from many other big men. The Spurs superstar once again demonstrated his value with a dominant performance on Tuesday.
After suffering back-to-back losses, the Spurs had previously earned their first win of the season, but head coach Mitch Johnson did not consider that victory a major accomplishment. However, San Antonio’s dominant performance against the Kings appeared to leave Wembanyama feeling much more comfortable with the team’s progress.
“I think we felt today what we were supposed to do and what we weren’t. And we actually showed progress through the game. So, I think I hope we can stick to the good stuff we did,” Wembanyama said.
Last season, Wembanyama and the young Spurs team made headlines with a trip to the NBA Finals, though their championship hopes ultimately ended with the New York Knicks winning the title.
Now, the Spurs are once again pursuing their championship dream this season. Whether Wembanyama can lead San Antonio all the way to a title remains to be seen, but his performances continue to give the franchise reasons to believe.
