Open Thread: LaMarcus Aldridge and Rudy Gay move up the all-time scoring list this week

Last night, Rudy Gay surpassed “Big Game James” Worthy as the 105th all-time scorer in NBA history. Rudy’s shot has been spot on this season and his output remains consistent with his average. If he remains healthy and continues to play at his currently level, he could end the year in the Top 100 just behind teammate DeMar DeRozan.

On Tuesday, LaMarcus Aldridge scored 13 points in the Spurs road win against the unflappable Oklahoma City Thunder. His fifth point (see the 1 minute 37 second of highlights below) of the night was enough to move him to 47th all-time, supplanting John Stockton.

Aldridge is just a couple hundred points from joining the 20,000 club and shortly thereafter overtaking Antawn Jamison who retired with 20,042. Aldridge’s scoring has dipped as he moves into his mid-30s, but if he maintains his current stride of roughly 15 points per game, it is feasible that he will land between George Gervin (currently 41st) and David Robinson (42nd) by the end of the season. That’s a nice cozy spot.

Earlier this season DeMar DeRozan cracked the top 100 scoring all time only to be knocked out again by Stephen Curry. DeRozan currently sits 90 points from Latrell Sprewell, when he will once again breech the top 100 and permanently send Latrell out of the top tier.

Good to know even in retirement, the Spurs are still disrupting Sprewell’s game. I still laugh every time I see this commercial.

Worthy, Stockton, Gervin, Robinson, Jamison, and Sprewell. Good company for Gay, Aldridge, and DeRozan.
