Open Thread: For the Spurs, the 2000 NBA Draft was a bust

Welcome to the Open Thread. During the month of July, we are talking NBA Draft. As we lead up to the 2021 NBA Draft on July 29th, we will be revisiting the Spurs draft choices. Today we remember 2000.

Although the Spurs owned the 24th pick of the millennial draft, the Bulls had traded up leaving the Spurs to draft Chris Carrawell as the 41st pick, which they had obtained from the Orlando Magic. Carrawell played overseas before playing in the D-League. Despite not making his way into the NBA, Carrawell has maintained a career in basketball and is currently an assistant coach at Duke University.

In the second round, the Spurs selected Cory Hightower. Hightower was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for two future second round picks who will be mentioned in the next two installments of this series. Hightower also never set foot on an NBA court, although he did play a stint with the Harlem Globetrotters between seasons in the CBA. He spent some time overseas as well as with the USBL.

While the 2000 draft appeared to be a bust for the Spurs, the 2001 would more than make up for the off year of drafting.
