After nearly a full year of the silent treatment, details on Sonic Origins is suddenly exploding, though not from SEGA itself. The game was recently rated in South Korea, then again in Australia. Key art for the game was also discovered via the PSN Store.

Thanks to our friends over at VGC, we now have more details on what the game itself will entail via an early PSN listing, along with a strong implication of a physical edition.

We’ve also seen mention of a possible release date, but are currently unable to verify this. Over on the Famiboards forum, users have made reference to a June 22nd release date on the AUS PSN Store. However, we’ve since accessed the listing ourselves and it currently says “Release date to be determined”. It’s unclear at this stage whether the date was originally visible and has since been removed, or if this is simply pure speculation.

Sonic Origins will include two distinct modes: Classic Mode and Anniversary Mode. Classic Mode will display the game in its original resolution and will include limited lives, just like the original releases from the ’90s.

Anniversary Mode, meanwhile, will grant the player with unlimited lives and display the game in a new 16:9 widescreen display. We’ll be honest, we’re a bit disappointed there doesn’t appear to be an option to mix and match, here; we’d love to play the game in widescreen mode but with everything else intact from the original release. To be clear, though, SEGA has yet to announce anything officially, so there’s every chance this option will be available.

In addition, the game will include missions that will task the player with collecting coins. These can then be spent in the Museum Mode to unlock new content, challenges, and special stages. The product description also makes mention of “new areas to explore”. What this will entail is up in the air at the moment, but perhaps we could see something along the lines of Hidden Palace Zones. Finally, it appears the opening and ending animations for each game have been updated.

For fans of physical media, it sounds like Sonic Origins will also be getting a full boxed release. The PSN listing mentions that owners of a PS4 disc can upgrade to the PS5 version of the game, heavily implying that a Switch boxed release will launch alongside.

Hopefully we’ll be getting some official details on Sonic Origins very soon. Will you be picking this one up? Let us know!
