Mike McCarthy Takes Questionable Shot At Former Cowboys Coach
Mike McCarthy has an out-of-this-league philosophy
The Dallas Cowboys decided to part ways with Kellen Moore after losing in the Divisional Round to the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Mike McCarthy appeared badly outcoached by 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan and needed to switch things up for next season. The Los Angeles Chargers immediately hired Moore after the Cowboys were done with him.
Philosophical differences explained
Reports came out after Moore left that McCarthy wanted Moore gone due to philosophical differences. McCarthy explained in more detail this week exactly what those differences were. According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, McCarthy said he values running the ball and using up the clock over finishing drives with points instead of punts:
“I’ve been where Kellen’s been,” McCarthy said. “Kellen wants to light the scoreboard up, but I want him to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense. I think when you’re a coordinator, you know but you’re in charge of the offense. Being a head coach and being a play caller, you’re a little more in tune with (everything).
I don’t desire to be the No. 1 offense in the league. I want to be the No. 1 team in the league with the number of wins and a championship. And if we’ve got to give up some production and take care of the ball a little better to get that, then that’s what we’ll do because we have a really good defense.”
We’ll see where running, even more, gets the Cowboys next season. Dallas ranked ninth in the NFL for rushing yards last season with Moore’s playcalling. The Cowboys’ defense has plenty of elite players. One would think the offense wouldn’t need to give up production to keep them elite.
