Mary Trump: President visiting Alamo, Texas to ‘make a stand’

President Donald Trump is flying to visit Alamo, Texas, on Tuesday.

His niece, Mary Trump, believes the destination was intended to invoke the symbolism behind the 1836 battle that occurred 240 miles north in San Antonio. The small town near the U.S.-Mexico border was named after the famed mission.

On Monday, Mary Trump was interviewed by CNN’s Chris Cuomo about her uncle’s trip to Texas. Cuomo, after correcting himself that Trump was traveling to Alamo, not The Alamo, said “the symbol is there.”

“Do you think that’s why he’s going there?” Cuomo asked.

“Undoubtedly,” Mary Trump responded. “I’m sure somebody else told him to go there, because you know as well as I do Donald knows absolutely nothing about American history. But I’m sure once he was told what the symbolism was he thought it was a good idea.”

The president’s niece, a psychologist and longtime critic of her uncle, wrote the 2020 book “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the Most Dangerous Man In the World.”

“I guess whoever informed him about the Alamo didn’t tell him how it ended,” Mary Trump said. “He is indeed going there to make a stand of one kind or another.”

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez noted Monday that tensions are “running dangerously high” as Trump heads for Texas.

“I urge both sides to keep passions in check because ultimately the Rio Grande Valley has a unique opportunity to demonstrate to the world that peaceful public discourse is more effective than public violence,” Cortez wrote.

A White House statement ahead of the trip pointed to the border wall, not the Battle of the Alamo.

“President Trump is expected to travel to Alamo, Texas, on Tuesday to mark the completion of more than 400 miles of border wall — a promise made, promise kept — and his Administration’s efforts to reform our broken immigration system,” Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere said.

Trump is expected to deliver remarks near the wall at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
