Man killed after driving into tow truck on Southwest Side identified
A man who was killed after he crashed into the back of a flatbed tow truck was identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Julian Suarez Lira, 58, died in the crash at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the 8500 block of Interstate 35 South, San Antonio police said.
Lira was driving a 1999 Mercedes-Benz C230 at a “high rate of speed” south on the access road near Palo Alto Road, police said.
Witnesses told police the C230 was passing other vehicles as it approached a parked 2019 Hino 258 tow truck that had its emergency lights on.
Lira tried to maneuver around the tow truck, but crashed into it instead, a police report states.
The rear passenger side corner of the flatbed hit the windshield of the Meredes-Benz, fatally striking Lira, investigators said.
Investigators said the sun was in their eyes as they neared the scene, which may have contributed to accident.
