‘Lines never stopped’ at a West Side bakery after San Antonio rallied to keep it in business

Updated

One West Side bakery went from full showcases of pan dulce to nearly empty in a matter of hours thanks to the power of social media and support from San Antonians.

Like many small businesses, Guerrero’s Bakery has been hit hard as the coronavirus pandemic has upended daily life. The bakery was a usual stop for morning breakfast tacos and sweets, but things had been quiet since the stay-at-home orders were issued in March and also now that many are still uncomfortable going to public places, longtime customer Angelica Hernandez said.

She said the sight of the business’ empty parking lot motivated her to enlist the help of Facebook to keep Guerrero’s from closing.

“He would always sell out on his breakfast tacos fast, his homemade tortillas would be gone by noon, “Herenandez wrote in a signal boost on Wednesday about the bakery’s owner, who she calls Mr. Guerrero. “Customers were always in and out! He’s now worried he’s going to lose his business.”

Within hours of posting the call for help, people started showing up to buy sweets and tacos “without hesitation,” Hernandez said.

The post had more than 12,000 shares in less than 24 hours. The conversation carried over on Twitter, where more offshoot boosts were penned by San Antonians trying to keep the business afloat.

Hernandez said she checked in with Mr. Guerrero later in the day. He told her his inventory was nearly empty and “the lines never stopped.”

“I stopped by Wednesday before he closed to speak to him and he said he couldn’t thank me enough; he has been so busy with all of his new customers,” Hernandez added.

For those interested in supporting the shop, Henandez suggests trying the tacos de chicharrones with chile and says the homemade tortillas are “delicious.”

Guerrero’s Bakery is located at 533 N. General McMullen Drive and is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
