Leicester are hoping to finalise the appointment of their new manager this week with the start of the new Championship season less than two months away.

The Foxes have been without a permanent boss since sacking Brendan Rodgers on April 2, with interim boss Dean Smith unable to keep them in the top flight.

Smith has held talks with club chiefs with Scott Parker – who won promotion with Fulham and Bournemouth – and Manchester City coach Enzo Maresca also among those considered.

There has also been some support for former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer while former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard was on the list but has now held talks with Saudi club Al-Ettifaq.

The new boss will have to conduct a full squad rebuild, with eight players out of contract at the end of last season and James Maddison and Harvey Barnes set to be sold.

Leicester’s first choice to succeed Rodgers was Graham Potter, but the former Brighton boss took a break after being shown the door by Chelsea and would back himself to land a job in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Tom Cairney has emerged as one of Leicester’s early transfer targets. The midfielder has a year left on his contract at Fulham and is a proven performer in the Championship.
