Leicester and Crystal Palace ‘will battle to sign James Tarkowski’

Leicester and Crystal Palace are ready to compete for the signature of Burnley defender James Tarkowski this summer, according to The Mirror.

The 27-year-old was a target for the Foxes last summer after they sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United, but Burnley’s £50m valuation prevented a deal.

However, Brendan Rodgers remains keen on Tarkowski, who has won two caps for England after making his debut in 2018.

The Leicester boss is in the market for a new central defender and is also said to be considering Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake and Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard.

According to The Mirror, Rodgers wants to add an experienced centre-half who is proven in the Premier League.

Should he choose to pursue Tarkowski, Rodgers can expect to face competition from Palace for the former Brentford star.

Roy Hodgson is also keen as he looks to strengthen the defensive options in his squad before the start of next season.

The defender’s contract expires in 2022 and Burnley may be forced to accept significantly less than the £50m they demanded last summer.

Tarkowski has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season and is currently top of the charts for headed clearances in the Premier League with 81.
