Leicester earned a welcome victory in European competition after their recent domestic struggles but their win over Randers was overshadowed by a worrying incident involving James Maddison.

Barely 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute, Maddison was taken off after having medical attention as he lay on the turf. The playmaker seemed to be conscious throughout but Leicester took no chances and, after medical staff were seen checking his pulse, he was replaced by Hamza Choudhury.

Maddison walked straight down the tunnel as Leicester waited to be updated on his condition. Goals from Wilfred Ndidi, Harvey Barnes, Patson Daka and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall gave Brendan Rodgers’ men a comfortable lead ahead of next week’s second leg in Denmark, with Vito Hammershoj-Mistrati briefly equalising for the visitors before half-time.

Randers were playing their first competitive game for more than two months due to the winter break in Denmark’s Superliga, and it showed in the first half as Leicester created numerous chances.

Yet they still showed their usual fragility at the back. Kasper Schmeichel had an escape when, under no pressure, he presented the ball to Alhadji Kamara, who was too slow to react.

The crowd then gave a huge cheer when Jannik Vestergaard, who has struggled badly since his summer move from Southampton, completed a routine headed clearance.

That was the cue for Leicester to pour forward. Daka headed Youri Tielemans’ cross over in the 12th minute and then took a heavy touch when sent clear by Dewsbury-Hall, who was denied by Carlgren moments later.

The home side made the breakthrough in the 23rd minute. After Ademola Lookman’s corner was half-cleared, he collected the ball from Tielemans before swapping passes with Ndidi, who beat Carlgren from close range via a deflection.

After that, Carlgren kept his team in it. He kept out Barnes following a powerful run from deep, then produced another fine stop with his foot to divert Dewsbury-Hall’s effort wide.

From the corner, he could only parry Caglar Soyuncu’s volley into the air where Daniel Amartey – under no pressure – somehow headed wide of an open goal from two yards.

And after Dewsbury-Hall had been thwarted by Carlgren a third time, Randers levelled. Marc Albrighton’s slip let in Tosin Kehinde, and from the cross the untracked Hammershoj-Mistrati guided a controlled finish beyond the reach of Schmeichel.

Having dominated the half, Leicester suddenly found themselves level – a perfect indicator of their recent difficulties.

But they reacted well and regained their lead within five minutes of the restart. Lookman ran onto Dewsbury-Hall’s pass and when Carlgren and substitute Oliver Bundgaard got into a tangle, Barnes picked up the pieces to score from 12 yards.

And Leicester moved further ahead in the 54th minute when Tielemans bemused Simon Graves with a step-over and though Carlgren saved the shot, Daka was there to tap in the rebound.

Tielemans repeated the trick soon afterwards to set up Lookman only for Carlgren – who was having a fine night – to show excellent reflexes once again.

Dewsbury-Hall got the goal his display deserved when substitute Kelechi Iheanacho released Lookman, who cut the ball back for the midfielder to apply a simple finish.

With Maddison off, Leicester were forced to complete the game with 10 men when Soyuncu picked up an injury in stoppage time and could not be replaced, with the Foxes having used their five substitutes.
