Home unbeaten streak snapped at 14 games as New England is defeated by Columbus Crew

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (14-10-7, 52 pts.) were defeated 2-1 versus Columbus Crew (15-9-8, 53 pts.) in a match on Wednesday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts to a crowd of 14,144.

The team started their lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Earl Edwards Jr. starting in net with a backline of (left back) Matt Polster, (center backs) Dave Romney, and Andrew Farrell, along with (right back) DeJuan Jones. The defensive midfield spots were manned by Mark-Anthony Kaye (left), Noel Buck (right), The midfield roles were manned by Tomás Chancalay (left), Emmanuel Boating (right wing), and Carles Gil (center) in the attacking midfield role. Giacomo Vrioni started the match as the lone striker.

Midfielder Ian Harkes remains unavailable (Head Injury). Sources close to me confirm that Ian fractured his Adam’s Apple. His timetable is unknown.

Midfielder Nacho Gil was unavailable for tonight’s match due to a right leg injury.

For the third week in a row, Revolution goalkeeper Tomáš Vaclík was not on the Matchday Roster.

The match kicked off with New England starting from the center circle. Giacomo Vrioni played the ball backwards to Matt Polster, who elected to play the ball wide to ride to DeJuan Jones to build out of the back.

New England’s first moment of the match came in the 5th minute when Carles Gil’s free kick struck the wall, and the rebound found the foot of Emmanuel Boateng, but his effort went over the crossbar.

In the 8th minute, play was stopped due to a head injury to Mark-Anthony Kaye. He returned to the pitch one minute later.

Nashville’s first moment of the match came in the 12th minute when defender #25 Sean Zawadski’s long range effort was met with a fingertip save by Earl Edwards Jr.

In the 15th minute, play was stopped AGAIN due to yet another head injury to Mark-Anthony Kaye. He returned to the pitch once more, one minute later.

Entering the 20th minute, Columbus took the early lead.

Following a Revolution scoring opportunity, #20 Alexandru Matan received the ball and drove down the left flank and passed it centrally to find #10 Diego Rossi unmarked for the easy right-footed trap and then shot into the bottom right corner past Earl Edwards Jr. This is Diego Rossi’s 3rd MLS goal this season.

Another massive chance by New England came in the 31st minute when DeJuan Jones took on two defenders with some scissor moves before unleashing a low-driven shot that went through the legs of the first defender, but was saved by goalkeeper #28 Patrick Schulte.

Just 2 minutes later, Columbus had a huge chance when defender #23 Mohamed Farsi took a shot that was muffed by Earl Edwards Jr, but then was collected once more by Edwards Jr.

New England’s best chance of the half came in the 34th minute when Tomás Chancalay found Emmanuel Boateng for a left-footed shot at the back post was fantastically saved by #28 Patrick Schulte.

In the 45+2 minute, Revolution midfielder Matt Polster was issued a yellow card for a foul on Columbus Crew defender #23 Mohamed Farsi.

After the 45+5 minutes, the match entered halftime level with Columbus ahead 1-0.

The second half kicked off with Columbus starting from the center circle. #10 Diego Rossi elected to play it back to his center backs, who elected to build out of the back.

Just two minutes into the second half, New England leveled the match.

Midfielder Tomás Chancalay received the ball in midfield and found Carles Gil on the right flank. Gil then elected to play DeJuan Jones down the right flank. He then elected for the early cross to find Tomás Chancalay darting into the box for the right-footed close range finish in the right corner past goalkeeper #28 Patrick Schulte. This is Chancalay’s 4th MLS goal this season.

Entering the 55th minute, Tomás Chancalay had yet another fantastic opportunity to advance the scoreline for New England, but his long distance shot struck the crossbar.

In the 58th minute, Columbus Crew defender #18 Malte Amundsen was issued a yellow card for a foul on Revolution midfielder Tomás Chancalay.

In the 61st minute, Columbus Crew midfielder #6 Darlington Nagbe was issued a yellow card for a foul on Revolution midfielder Carles Gil.

Entering the 66th minute, Columbus forward #9 Cucho had scored at the back post, but was later called for offsides.

In the 70th minute, Columbus Crew defender #25 Sean Zawadski was issued a yellow card for a foul on Revolution forward Giacomo Vrioni.

Following the foul, Revolution head coach Clint Peay made his first two changes of the match by substituting forward Giacomo Vrioni and midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye and replacing them with forward Gustavo Bou and defender Ben Sweat. Following the substitution, Vrioni was seen on the bench, frustrated with his substitution.

In the 75th minute, Revolution head coach Clint Peay made his third change of the match by substituting midfielder Emmanuel Boateng and replacing him with forward Esmir Bajraktarević.

Entering the 86th minute, Columbus regained the lead.

Following a corner kick, defender #18 Malte Amundsen was left horrifically marked by Ben Sweat, which left a left-footed easy tap in that struck the top of the bar and in past Earl Edwards Jr. This is Malte Amundsen’s 3rd MLS goal this season.

In the 90th minute, Columbus Crew forward #17 Christian Ramirez was issued a yellow card for time wasting.

In the 90+4 minute, Revolution head coach Clint Peay made his fourth and final change of the match by substituting midfielder Noel Buck and replacing him with forward Bobby Wood.

After the 90+5 minutes, the match ended with Columbus Crew victorious over the New England Revolution 2-1.

New England now move to 11 wins, 1 losses, and 4 draws at home, as this is their first loss at home this season.

The New England Revolution (14-10-7, 52 pts.) head out to Orlando, Florida to face Orlando City SC (16-9-7, 57 pts.) in an MLS Match on Saturday, October 7th. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
