The newest member of the San Antonio Spurs was born just days after the new millennium. The Apple Valley, Minnesota native played varsity high school ball starting in the 8th grade and was a starter by his Freshman year. During high school, Jones racked up two Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year accolades as well as the McDonald’s All-American and Minnesota Mr. Basketball honors in his senior year.

He then took his talents to Duke University where he made the ACC All-Freshman team and ACC All-Defensive Team in his first season with the Blue Devils. As a sophomore, Jones once again made the ACC All-Defensive Team and added ACC Player of the Year, ACC Defensive Player of the Year, First-team All-ACC, and was named to the Third-team All-American by Associated Press, the United States Basketball Writers Association, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Tre was chosen by the Spurs in the 41st spot during the second round of the 2020 NBA Draft. He chose number 33 for his jersey (presumably because #3 was already taken).

Although Jones has only played five minutes in the NBA, he has already shown traces of fearlessness when driving to the basket and the kind of defensive acumen that when fostered in San Antonio can spell results for both player and franchise alike.

Although Tre spent last night in Los Angeles as the Spurs faced the Lakers, he is most likely kicking off his twenty-first year back where it all started. Where many athletes would enjoy spending their first legal drinking day in the lights of Hollywood, Jones has the opportunity to spend the weekend twenty-five minutes from where he grew up and started his basketball career playing against his hometown Minnesota Timberwolves in back-to-back games Saturday and Sunday.

Happy birthday, Tre. Many warm wishes today, and here’s to a healthy and exciting year.
