21st June 2026 marks the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog’s Mega Drive debut. In North America, 23rd June is generally accepted as the launch date, but copies were being sold a couple of days earlier in the UK, at least. (Release dates were generally a little looser in the ’80s and ’90s, with stores often selling stock as soon as it arrived.) Regardless of the exact date in your territory, blue hedgehogs have been in vogue for three-and-a-half decades now, and the Sega mascot has never been more popular.
Seeing Sonic on a Nintendo console would have been unthinkable in the ’90s, but time moves almost as fast as the ‘hog himself. And so, to celebrate his 35th birthday, we’re republishing this ranked list of every Sonic platformer to grace Nintendo consoles. Enjoy!
