Crystal Palace seal impressive deal for Mainz standout Jean-Philippe Mateta
Premier League outfit Crystal Palace have struck a deal to sign Mainz star Jean-Philippe Mateta on loan until 2022, it has been confirmed.
Germany stint
Mateta, 23, has been on the books of Bundesliga side Mainz since 2018.
The Frenchman, who lined out for his country at both U19 and U21 level, is a product of the famed academy of Ligue 1 giants Lyon, but has begun to truly make a name for himself during his time in Germany.
Mateta’s debut campaign at the Opel Arena saw the hitman rack up an impressive 14 league goals, to go along with 2 assists.
And, on the back of a difficult year last time out, during which Mainz narrowly avoided relegation, the towering attacker has since rediscovered his goalscoring touch.
Across 17 appearances in all competitions this season, Mateta has found the net on a none-too-shabby 10 occasions.
Palace bound
As outlined above, however, if the latest word stemming from the media on Tuesday is to be believed, then Mainz look set to see out the remainder of the campaign, and beyond, without the services of their star goalscorer.
This comes amid widespread reports that Mateta is on the verge of a move to the Premier League, with Crystal Palace.
As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Frenchman, who was actually named as a target for Palace’s capital rivals Tottenham late last year, is primed for an imminent loan switch to Selhurst Park.
Mateta is expected to put pen to paper on an 18-month deal, including an obligatory purchase option worth around €17 million.
An official announcement regarding the transfer could even be forthcoming as early as Tuesday:
Jean-Philippe Mateta joins Crystal Palace on loan until 2022 with obligation to buy [around €17m] as per @domfifield, confirmed.
He turned down two bids from Italian clubs and will sign for #CPFC tomorrow – medicals pending. Here-we-go soon. 🤝 @JacobSteinberg @ed_aarons https://t.co/3C76Z9KnCj
