CPS Energy will put an old power plant on the market a year after developers out of plans to redevelop the property.

The CPS Energy board of trustees approved a resolution to put the old Mission Road power plant property on the market. The resolution also authorizes the president and CEO Paula Gold-Williams to determine a sale price for all or parts of the property.

Since revenue from the sale goes towards operations and development of public systems, the sale is exempt from any notice and bidding requirements.

The now closed Mission Road power plant was set for a $75 million renovation that would transform the property into a center promoting San Antonio as a hub for energy innovation. The project included features like an accelerator and fabrication labs for energy startup companies, an education center, energy exhibits, and an auditorium.

That was until EPIcenter abandoned project in February 2020. EPIcenter was charged with a commitment of $20 million on the project, but the problem was finding the other $55 million.

The gas-powered Mission Road plant was built in 1909 and later shut down in 2003.
