A married couple was taken into custody after they allegedly cleaned up evidence related to a bloody body found Sunday wrapped in plastic in west Bexar County, a source told KSAT Investigates on Monday.
Margaret Brown and Christopher Henson, who are both 30, are described in an incident report as the owners of the west Bexar County home where the body was found. They face a tampering with physical evidence charge, records show. The charge is a third-degree felony.
However, property records show another woman, who is listed in the report as the victim’s roommate, is the owner of the home.
According to jail records, Brown and Henson were booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center just before 9 a.m. Monday. Their bonds have been set at $100,000 each.
“A man’s life was taken, after finding out how it happened, it’s just unfortunate … it’s insane to me,” said Celeste Maravilla, who lives in a neighboring home.
Brown and the victim’s roommate reported a man missing on Sunday, records obtained by KSAT Investigates show. During a preliminary sweep of their home, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said a deputy found a body wrapped tightly in plastic inside a closet in one of the bedrooms.
The deputy who found the body inside the bag believed it to be the missing man, according to the incident report.
Authorities have not officially identified the body or confirmed it is the same man reported missing. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
“This doesn’t happen here; I’ve never seen that before, especially so close to my house,” Maravilla said.
‘Night terrors’
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the missing persons report before 4:30 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 700 block of Fort Leonard, near Potranco Road, records show. Deputies made contact with Brown, who described herself as the missing man’s “best friend.”
Brown was concerned after hearing the missing man yelling and saw blood on his door, according to the incident report.
“Brown stated the man would not let her into his room,” the report said. “She asked if he wanted privacy to clean himself up, and he agreed. Brown went downstairs and never saw (the man) again.”
The man was last seen around 2 a.m. Sunday, Brown said.
Brown explained the missing man, his roommate and herself all experience “night terrors,” the report said. The man would often accidentally hurt himself during his episodes, but this time there was more blood than usual.
The missing man was described to be 6 feet 4 inches tall, about 180 pounds, with green eyes. He also had numerous tattoos, including card suits on his forearm, a rose on his right hand, “DGAF” on his upper body and a bear paw on his right arm and lips. The report said the man was last seen wearing a gray cutoff T-shirt, blue jeans and black Vans.
The man had no family in Texas, according to Brown, and only lived in the area for two months. She said the missing man had no history of self-harm and his injuries stem from the night terrors.
Deputies said the missing man’s roommate was not at the home during Brown’s 2 a.m. encounter with him.
Body found with pool of blood in closet
Both Brown and the roommate “searched the residence multiple times and could not locate (the missing man),” the report stated.
A deputy at the home saw “heavy pools of blood” in the man’s upstairs bedroom, the report said.
Cleaning chemicals were also in the bedroom, along with paper towels covering blood spots on the carpet. The deputy said a box cutter with blood was on the dresser.
During a second walk-through of the home, the deputy asked Brown and the missing man’s roommate if they checked all of the rooms. The report stated Brown searched the entire house for him multiple times but did not check the attic because the door to enter was difficult to open.
The deputy climbed up to the attic and didn’t find anything. The report said Brown welcomed the deputy to search the house for himself and accompanied the deputy during the search.
Details from the report said the deputy approached a room next to the missing man’s bedroom, which Brown described as vacant.
The deputy opened the door, walked toward a closet and found a 29-year-old man dead inside a large plastic bag within the closet, according to the incident report obtained by KSAT Investigates. The bag was thick with a pool of blood visible inside.
“The male was wrapped in plastic with both the closet door and bedroom door closed,” the report said.
Both Brown and the roommate stated they did not open the closet in the vacant room, the report said.
The deputy who opened the closet door ordered everyone inside the home to leave, including Brown’s husband, Christopher Henson — who arrived shortly before the man was found dead in the closet.
Additional deputies outside detained Henson. During questioning, Henson stated, “I have never seen a dead body before,” according to the report.
The report said Henson did not see the body in the closet when the deputy was there.
According to the missing man’s roommate, Henson and Brown went to Walmart and bought several cleaners, such as hydrogen peroxide and paper towels, on Sunday.
“When they got back, Brown was attempting to clean the blood pools while Henson assisted by handing her supplies,” the roommate told investigators.
Salazar called the death “highly suspicious” on Sunday.
“It’s just highly unlikely that anybody would harm themselves and then wrap themselves up in plastic as tightly as what we’ve found here,” Salazar said.
