Work crews picking up trash near WW White and Higdon roads on Thursday discovered what is believed to be human remains on the side of the road, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said the work crews came across a tarp and attempted to pick it up but it felt heavier than normal and noticed what appeared to be human hair.

Salazar said there was a low level of decomposition present and estimates the tarp has only been out for several hours.

“The work crews come here frequently because this is a known dump spot and, when they were here the other day, they didn’t recall seeing the tarp,” Salazar said.

The desolate stretch of road on the southeast side of the county is surrounded by grassy fields with no buildings in sight. Investigators blocked off the road and expect to be in the area for several hours.

Investigators are waiting for crime scene technicians to open the tarp to determine the gender and age of the victim. Salazar said they don’t know the condition of the body.

“It is a small package the body is in, so right now we just don’t know what the state of it is,” Salazar said.

Salazar is asking anyone who may have known someone who has gone missing recently to contact BCSO to possibly help identify the body. To contact detectives, call 210-335-6070 or email [email protected].
